Opening Night

On Thursday, the 29th of April 2004 Timor witnessed a show of Timorese talent held at a venue worthy of the honour, Uma Fukan. The exhibition of stunning black and white photographs was the culmination of 3 months photography training undertaken by 7 photographers, facilitated by Wendy Lear, Internews Photography mentor and funded by UNDP.

The photographs were judged by Milton Wordley, founder of the Australian Magazine and Commercial Photography Association, and Phil Carrick, Photo Editor of The Australian Financial Review, with the main prize being a Nikon camera and 2 lenses. The images were judged based on the theme of 'connections' and the quality of the photographs, and the judges had a tough time deciding, with 1st and 2nd prize being incredibly close. Yahya Lambertz was awarded 1st place, winning the camera, with his captivating portrait 'Ancestors with Grandchild' a young boy proudly standing with traditional statues. Susana Cardoso received 2nd place and a cash prize for her beautifully composed image of children playing a traditional game. Candido Alves took out the Highly Commendable with his creative playground image.

The opening night was a huge success, with over 300 people in attendance, 20 images being sold within the first 2 hours and popular local musician Ego playing his own Timor style originals into the night.
